We always have strong sockeye salmon runs on Kodiak, but this is one of the best we have seen in years. They are still heading up river in massive numbers when usually this river is finished by this time in August. Bright and fresh too! And where there are sockeyes, there are bears! It is an awe-inspiring experience to fish alongside these mighty mammals!

The mighty King Salmon, also known as Chinook, is recognizable for its black gums and oval tail spots. But mostly for its size! Our main season is June and July, but we catch feeders throughout our season. Beautiful and delicious!

Fishing continues to be phenomenal. Nice hauls of halibut, black rockfish, cod, and yellow-eye rockfish on the saltwater. Blue skies and 60 degree weather. My kind of paradise!

It has been a great year for Snow Crab with full pots every time they are picked. These delicious melt-in-your mouth crustaceans are a great addition to any meal. For appetizers, Chef Debbi has been serving traditional crab cocktail as well as her new crab rangoon. Yum! This isn’t her exact recipe (closely guarded secret 😉 ) but this recipe looks good too!

There is no cooler experience than fishing alongside the mighty Kodiak Brown Bear! We share the river peacefully, and they out fish us every time. It is sockeye salmon season on this river.

Great days on the saltwater fishing Kodiak Island and filling fish boxes. Halibut, king salmon, yellow-eye rockfish, black rockfish and cod. Can’t forget the crab! Full pots! Pair with a nice compound butter and enjoy. Although this crab is so tender and delicious it almost doesn’t even need butter.

We are open for business! It is great to be back out on the water. Have you ever caught a halibut that weighs the same as you? But been a little timid and not wanted to get too close? That was this little man’s experience yesterday. So fun! Thanks for the assist Captain Frank.

Halibut regulations have been loosened this year for Kodiak. No annual limits and no closure days! We have always had the highest limits in the state, without a slot restrictions, and now it is even better. Come on up and see for yourself!

Opening day is in one week and we are so excited! Testing out the waters for bottom fish. Lots of yellow-eye and a few halibut. My new favorite way to eat white fish is with this Mango, Peach and Pineapple Salsa.

Can’t get enough fishing? Kayak fishing is a great way to spend an evening at Larsen Bay Lodge if you haven’t had your fill during the day. We have a double and a single and usually calm water right out in front of the lodge. Lots of daylight too!

One of our guides hit the water today in a kayak to see what he could catch. Past adventures have included being towed around by a massive halibut! Today’s catch was a cod, perfect for fish & chips tonight.

King Salmon season has begun! We have seen a few the last couple weeks and the numbers are increasing exponentially daily. They are the largest of the five main species of salmon and some argue the tastiest . Although any true Alaskan knows the red sockeye salmon holds that honor. 😉 Whether the delicious red meat or the illusive white meat, this is a favorite for any table.
